Special Weather Statement
...HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS IN EAST-CENTRAL WISCONSIN THIS MORNING, THEN VERY COLD FOR THE START OF THE WORK WEEK... Only flurries remained across east-central Wisconsin at daybreak. However, hazardous travel conditions are likely to linger throughout much of the morning as temperatures remain well below freezing, limiting the effectiveness of the melting agents typically used to treat roads. A bitterly cold air mass will settle into the area today, and then linger through Tuesday. The combination of the cold air and a steady west wind of 5 to 15 mph will result in conditions hazardous to anyone outdoors without adequate winter clothing. Wind chill indices of 20 below to 25 below zero are expected in central and north-central Wisconsin late tonight through Monday morning. Wind chills in the teens below zero are expected in the east. If later data continue to support this forecast, a Wind Chill Advisory will likely be posted from central and north- central Wisconsin. After a modest recovery Monday afternoon, wind chills will dip to 20 below to 30 below zero across the entire area late Monday night and Tuesday morning. Exposed skin can suffer frostbite in as little as 30 minutes under conditions such as those expected the next couple nights and mornings. Be sure to dress in appropriate clothing if you are going to be outdoors during this period. In addition to a warm coat or jacket, remember to wear a hat, and gloves or mittens. Read more
